Sharing Your Testimony

How Christ has changed your life

Introduction

A personal testimony is simply sharing your STORY of what God has done in your life through Jesus. One of the most effective ways to prepare your testimony is to ask three essential questions.

1. What was your life like before Christ?

2. How did you meet Christ?

3. How has Christ changed your life?

We get this framework from the Apostle Paul in Acts 26 when he gives a defense of the gospel before King Agrippa. Specifically notice verses 4, 12, and 20.

Work through the questions above. Write your testimony in your own words and practice sharing. It is important to focus on what God has done, not on anything you did.  People want to hear you talk about Jesus' impact in your life. Be concise. Be clear. Give relevant details. See the tabs above for more detail on how to craft an answer to each question.

Before Christ

The first question we want to answer in our testimony is: What was your life like before you met Christ?

1. You want to explain that you didn't know Jesus

2. You want to talk about sin but be careful not to talk about how "fun" it was. Instead communicate remorse and shame over your sin.

3. We also don't want to be too graphic about our sin. Speak in general terms instead of detailed events.

4. Be aware of your audience. If mostly peers and non-believers don't use Christian words they won't understand.

Example:

Before meeting Jesus I was living for parties, sports, girls, drinking, and drugs. I was living in sin. I never went to church and never had someone in my life who was telling me about Jesus. This continued for years until I started going to FCA at my high school...

When You Met Christ

Your focus in this section is explaining (as best as you remember) the first time you heard the gospel message and learned you were a sinner in need of a Savior.

1. If there was a specific event explain what happened. If you don't remember a specific event but you grew up in a christian home and you're believing in Jesus and repenting of your sins explain that.

Example: I went to FCA camp and heard the gospel for the first time. I heard that all the things I was living for were sinful and separating me from a relationship with God. I heard that Jesus died for my sins to forgive me. It was that night I put my faith in Jesus and asked God to save me from my sins.

Your Life Now

In this section, focus completely on how God has changed you. How you're serving Him now instead of yourself. How you're living to tell others about Jesus now.

Example: Since becoming a Christian, I got involved in a church, was baptized, and began serving in different ways. I also began serving as a Character Coach with FCA after some time.

Today I work on staff with FCA in the Greater Louisville Area.
